Teen Killed in Single-Vehicle Starke Crash
By Florida Auto Accident Attorney on July 26, 2010
A teenage girl was killed Friday night, July 23, in the small town of Starke, Florida, an article in the Florida Times-Union reported.
The crash occurred when the driver of a Ford 150 pickup truck lost control of the vehicle. As it started heading toward the woods, the truck overturned, ejecting two passengers in the vehicle and killing one. The Florida Highway Patrol says it is unclear who was driving the 2002 pickup.
The victim who died was Haley F. Forsyth, 17. Amber Sweat, 17, and John Howard, 18, were injured, Amber seriously. All three teens are from Starke and were taken to Shands Hospital in Starke. The accident happened around midnight on SW 163rd Street near SW 155 Way, west of Starke.
Our sincere condolences go out to the friends and family of Forsyth who lost her young life in this tragic accident. We will pray for the recovery of Amber. Howard was very lucky to receive only minor injuries.
Seat Belt Statistics
Unfortunately no one in this pickup truck was wearing their seat belt, according to FHP.
The same scenario struck the hearts of more than 4,054 parents of teens, ages 13 to 19, nationwide who were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2008, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, 2,983 people were killed in motor vehicle related crashes in 2008. Of these deaths, 1,795 individuals were drivers or passengers in vehicles equipped with safety belts and 60 percent (1,085) of them were not wearing safety belts.
In addition, 68 percent (54 of 79) of children up to age 17 involved in traffic crashes were not using safety equipment.
Teen Crashes
Unfortunately, the immaturity among young adult drivers often leads to risky driving practices. That is why auto accidents are the leading cause of death among teens. Florida wrongful death car accidents involving teens are often single-vehicle crashes resulting from not just a driving error, but speeding. And unfortunately, there often are other young people in the vehicle.
